At an event on Oct. 2, San Clemente, Calif. Mayor Jim Evert proclaimed Oct. 6-12 as Physician Assistant Week for the city in recognition of PAs’ significant impact as critical members of a healthcare team. Evert also presented Lara Francisco, PA-C and founder of Medelita, a local medical apparel company, with a proclamation plaque.
This week the physician assistant (PA) profession is honoring PAs’ invaluable role in transforming the future state of healthcare during National PA Week. Held every year from Oct. 6-12, PA Week is a time when PAs and PA students celebrate their profession with local and national events aimed to increase awareness of the value PAs bring to today’s healthcare team.
Francisco said in a speech to commemorate the occasion, “It’s an honor to promote the PA profession. PA Week is an important time to recognize the critical role of PAs working in all medical and surgical specialties.”
California has the second-highest number of practicing, licensed PAs among all 50 states (an estimated 6,700). Medelita, based in Southern California, has had a special affinity for PAs since its founding in 2008. That relationship is attributable, in part, to the important segment of the company’s customer base that PAs represent. But it is also due to the fact that the founder of Medelita, Lara Francisco, is a PA herself. It was her 10 years of experience as a PA that inspired her to launch Medelita in recognition of a dire need to improve the appearance, function and fit of lab coats and scrubs for all clinicians, including physician assistants.
