VA Physician Assistant Given Leadership Award

Russell Callender, an Army veteran and physician assistant at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, was given the 2013 Outstanding Physician Assistant Leadership Award by the Veterans Affairs Physician Assistant Association, The Houston Chronicle reports.

Callender has worked at the medical center nearly 28 years and practices in nuclear medicine.

“He is a leader and mentor to his peers and it comes as no surprise that he has received this recognition,” said Dr. J. Kalavar, the medical center’s chief of staff, of Callender’s achievement in a written statement.

Callender is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Veterans Caucus and the Veterans Affairs Physician Assistants Association. He is a 1975 graduate of the Baylor University U.S. Army Physician Assistant program.
