The latest evidence is physician staffing firm Merritt Hawkins’ annual review of health professional recruitment. Physician assistants (12th) and nurse practitioners (10th) made it into the top 20 most recruited professions for the first time. Family physicians came in first.

Forbes’ Bruce Jaspen explains that healthcare is moving toward less costly and more convenient settings, and the employers in these settings need primary care professionals such as family physicians, PAs and NPs.

Merritt Hawkins conducted the study from April 2012 to March 2013 and examined more than 3,000 recruiting assignments at a range of settings, including hospitals, academic medical centers, community health centers and medical groups.
